In honor of the warmth that’s surely on its way…we’re kicking off this edition of Notable Now with a beach scene painted by Senior Administrative Assistant Kim Barbour at Morrisville’s March 23rd Paint Night! The event raised $360 for the Morrisville Student Assistance Fund. Happy Spring!
Faculty member Roger Cranse had an essay published in The New York Times’ Vietnam ‘67 series. “Baguettes and the Forever War” was published February 27. Cranse served in Vietnam from 1966-1968. He teaches Introduction to Literature in Montpelier and English Composition in Winooski to the Vermont Air National Guard.
Winooski faculty member Linda Shere is enjoying successes in the literary world. Her poem “American Typewriter” was published in the Spring issue of Zig Zag Lit Mag, and she was accepted to the 8th annual Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference in Sicily for poetry. She will attend the Vermont Studio Center’s Vermont Artists Week in May. Shere teaches drawing, graphic design, and Storytelling in the Media.
Alumna Thato Ratsebe was honored at the Vermont State Colleges Hall of Fame dinner on March 15th. The annual event honors alumni from each of the colleges who are making significant contributions to their Vermont communities. Ratsebe earned a liberal studies degree in 2003 and is the Assistant Director and Programs Manager of the Association of Africans Living in Vermont, where she helps refugees as they settle into new lives.
Brattleboro student Melissa Buffum received the $2,500 Jesse M. Corum IV Scholarship for medical assisting from the Brattleboro Rotary Club Gateway Foundation. Buffum was honored at a March 1st award ceremony at CCV’s Brattleboro academic center.
Winooski faculty member Mike Ohler will receive the KidSafe Collaborative’s Outstanding Professional Award at the 29th annual awards luncheon on April 10th. KidSafe is a Chittenden County agency with the mission of preventing child abuse and neglect. Ohler has taught a variety of classes at CCV, including Intro to Sociology, Travel Writing, and Peace and Turmoil.
Alumna Michelle L. Laperle was re-elected to the Vermont State Employees Credit Union (VSECU) Board of Directors at VSECU’s annual meeting on March 21st. Laperle has been a State employee for more than 20 years. She earned her associate degree in human services.
Faculty member Cyndy Bittinger will deliver a lecture at Catamount Arts in St. Johnsbury on April 5th. “From Martha to Melania: The Changing Roles of First Ladies” is part of a lecture series put on by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UVM. Bittinger teaches Vermont history classes online.
