The winter weather might be winding down, but activity at CCV is ramping up. At this midway point in the spring semester, we’re celebrating the hard work and many talents of students, staff, and faculty around the state. Happy reading, and don’t forget to send your own news to marketing@ccv.edu!
- Veteran and Military Resource Advisor Marty McMahon is co-leading the Lyndon Veterans Book Group at Lyndon State College. The series began in January and meets on the second Monday of each month. The Vermont Humanities Council sponsors the series, and describes it as an “opportunity for veterans to explore books, poetry, articles, and short stories, with the goal of fostering camaraderie and a safe space to reflect and share ideas and questions.”
- Winooski Coordinator of Academic Services Jan Garrett-Ostermiller and faculty member Jen Berger helped organize “Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) – Burlington” on January 13, where they helped bring a White Ally Toolkit training with Dr. David Campt to over 75 participants.
- College and Career Pathways Manager Elizabeth King attended a February 9 meeting at the State House with Senator Bernie Sanders and German Ambassador Peter Wittig. The conversation focused on Germany’s apprenticeship and workforce development programs as well as opportunities for Vermont to adopt elements of these programs in its own workforce development initiatives.
- Winooski Coordinators of Academic Services Angie Albeck and Marianne DiMascio, who co-write and co-produce sketch comedy with their troupe Stealing from Work, open their next show at the Off Center for the Dramatic Arts on March 1st. They’ll also perform March 30th at the Town Hall Theater in Middlebury and April 19th at the Vermont Comedy Club in Burlington. The Burlington Free Press wrote a recent story about their new work, “The Unbearable Whiteness of Being,” which is their sixth production.
- The Bennington Community of Student Representatives (CSR) participated in More Love Letters, a non-profit organization with a national reach that seeks to offer support and encouragement to strangers through handwritten notes and cards. The Bennington CSR collected and delivered more than 20 letters of gratitude for residents at Bennington’s Vermont Veterans’ Home.
- Faculty member Jen Berger coordinated an event as part of the People’s State of the Union, a participatory art project that promotes local response, reaction to, and dialogue around the president’s State of the Union address. The January 30th event brought community members together to share personal stories and impressions of the state of the union. Berger teaches Dimensions in Winooski.
- Students, staff, and faculty at CCV-Middlebury hosted an open house on February 5th to celebrate the completion of a major building renovation. President Judy, VSC Board Chair Church Hindes, and members of the community toured the new classrooms and offices and enjoyed cupcakes provided by student and local business owner Allison Brown.
- Morrisville Senior Administrative Assistant Kim Barbour hosted CCV-Morrisville’s first Paint Night on Friday, February 23. 11 participants attended, and the event raised $220 for CCV-Morrisville’s Student Assistance Fund. The painting class will be held again on March 23rd and April 27th. Barbour is an accomplished painter whose work has been displayed at several local businesses.
