Fall semester has begun, and we’re welcoming students and faculty back to classrooms around the state. Here’s the late-summer news…happy reading, and don’t forget to send us your own notables and announcements at marketing@ccv.edu!
- Faculty member Margo Whitcomb is starring in Lost Nation Theater’s production of Shakespeare’s Will, with performances running September 5-15 at City Hall Arts Center in Montpelier. Whitcomb plays Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, in the story of the mystery surrounding Shakespeare’s bequest to her in his will. Whitcomb teaches acting classes at CCV.
- Rutland student Stephanie Reed was named a 2019 Leaders of Promise Scholar by the international honor society Phi Theta Kappa, and will receive a $1,000 award. Reed plans to transfer to Castleton University after completing her associate degree in liberal studies.
- Faculty member Linda Shere attended the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference in Ripton, which took place August 14-24. Shere teaches drawing classes and Storytelling through Media.
- Coordinator of student advising Marty McMahon was part of a ceremony honoring a local Navy veteran at Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center on August 20th. The ceremony was part of a project organized by Bayada Home Health Care that aims to honor veteran patients for their military service. McMahon served in the military and as a veteran and military resource advisor at CCV before assuming the role of coordinator of student advising, where he continues to support veteran and military students at CCV.
- Faculty member Dan Alcorn, who paddles for the Norwich University Dragon Boat team, came in second place at the Lake Champlain Dragon Boat Festival in Burlington on August 4th. In other news, Alcorn is pleased to announce that he officially became ABD (all but dissertation) in his quest for a doctorate in international business at Northcentral University. At CCV, Alcorn teaches economics courses online.
- A cohort of 18 licensed nursing assistants at Central Vermont Medical Center are part of a new pathway that will prepare them to become licensed practical nurses at the hospital. The partnership between CCV, CVMC, and Vermont Tech allows students to continue working at the hospital while going to school on an accelerated schedule. Check out the full story here.
- Faculty member Beth Torpey presented at the Society of Consciousness Studies Conference, “Consciousness & Spirit II,” hosted by the Yale Divinity School in June. Entitled, “Global Sustainability, Consciousness Evolution and the Role of Water,” the presentation explored the need for an evolution of consciousness to address global sustainability issues. The role of water as both a resource and quantum biological connection to consciousness was also explored. Torpey teaches Science and Spirituality online.
- Jay Dubberly, faculty at St. Albans, Rutland, and Middlebury, celebrates the release of Issue 7 of Zig Zag Lit Mag, an arts & literature magazine for and by those who live, labor, or loiter in Addison County. There will be a release party held at the old town diner in Middlebury on September 22nd from 2–4 pm.
- Instructor Jen Guarino’s Forest Ecology class partnered with Montpelier’s North Branch Nature Center for a service learning project at the end of July, where they worked with NBNC teacher naturalist and CCV alumnus Zac Cota on a salamander study. Read the full story here!
