MONTPELIER, Vt. — Community College of Vermont (CCV)-Morrisville student Kim Barbour has been named a 2019 New Century Workforce Pathway Scholar and will receive a $1,250 scholarship. Barbour will be recognized during the Association of Community College Trustees’ (ACCT) Leadership Congress in San Francisco, California, in October 2019.

Barbour is an admissions specialist at CCV, and she will graduate from the College in June with a degree in administrative management. “When I started at CCV I had but two goals: to do my best and to help others do the same,” she said. “In high school, I never thought of myself as strong academically or as a leader in any sense of the word; however, I have come to the gradual realization that I can be those things with enough work and determination. Joining Phi Theta Kappa and earning this scholarship have validated those feelings, and I consider it an unexpected honor to be awarded this scholarship!”

This scholarship is the first of its kind to support students at associate degree-granting institutions who plan to enter the workforce upon the completion of a degree or certificate on a national scale. The program is sponsored by The Coca-Cola Foundation and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK). Scholars are selected based on their academic accomplishments, leadership, activities, and how they extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom. Over 2,000 students were nominated from more than 1,200 college campuses across the country. Only one New Century Workforce Pathway Scholar was selected from each state.

CCV’s dean of student affairs and strategic initiatives Heather Weinstein congratulated Barbour on behalf of the College. “CCV is proud to see Kim recognized for her academic achievements, commitment to reaching her goals, and graceful balance of work, life, and school responsibilities. The Workforce Pathway Scholarship is a testament to her leadership and dedication.”

PTK is the national honor society for community college students. CCV’s chapter was established in 2016.
